This announcement comes just one season after King set the AAC record with 50 total touchdowns, and he reiterated that he joined the program to play football, and still plans to do so. His team is off to a 1-3 start to their season, including losses to Jalen Hurts and the Oklahoma Sooners, along with Washington State and Tulane. King has started all three of those losses, along with their lone victory over Prairie View.
King joined the Cougars in 2016, and has since been through three different head coaches and four offensive coordinators. His father, Eric King, said that this move was best for his son, but did admit that D'Eriq was "not real comfortable" with his own decision. He does have hopes of one day playing in the Nationals Football League, and this tough decision may help him be ready for that moment, which makes this move seem somewhat selfish. Although, his father is okay with that, and said "sometimes you have to be."
