The Charlotte Hornets are a team relying heavily on their young talent since losing Kemba Walker to free agency last summer, as they look to build around those young assets and once again contend in the Eastern Conference. That won't be this season, but they did see one of their young stars take a hit from the league, as Malik Monk was suspended indefinitely on Wednesday under the NBA's anti-drug policy. Monk began serving the suspension on Wednesday with the Hornets' win over the New York Knicks, and it will continue until Monk can prove that he is in full compliance of the program. Specific details were not revealed as to why Monk received this suspension.
Hornets head coach James Borrego claimed that he had not spoken to Monk before Wednesday's game after learning of the suspension, but did state that he will give his guard his "full support."
Monk is in his third year out of Kentucky and has played in 191 games, with just one career start. He has mainly come off the bench this season, but is averaging 21 minutes per game, posting 10.3 points and 2.9 rebounds per contest. Before this suspension, Monk had recently gotten hot, averaging 18.2 points per game over this last seven. After a decent start to their season, the Hornets stand at just 20-38 on the year, six games out of a playoff spot in the East.
