Golden Knights Cruise to 3-0 in Home Opener
The Las Vegas Golden Knights hockey team is exactly what the city of Las Vegas needs at this time, and that was proven on Tuesday night. With the tragedy that recently took place in Vegas, the Golden Knights provided a successful distraction with a convincing 5-2 home-opening win over the Arizona Coyotes. The night was filled with tributes to those affected by the incident, as well as those who came to their aid and played the role of hero that night. The team held 58 seconds of silence during pregame for the 58 victims of the horrific night, and brought out the heroes during the players' introductions. It definitely didn't hurt that the team is off to a red hot start, as James Neal scored the game-winning goal for the third straight game, helping his new team make history. The Golden Knights are the first expansion team in NHL history to begin their first season 3-0. Neal ended up scoring twice, including once on the power play, while Tomas Nosek had the first home goal in Golden Knights history. Deryk Engelland and Oscar Lindberg also found the back of the net on the night. The newest NHL team will enjoy some rest before playing host to the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night.
Blues Stay Perfect With Win Over Rangers
The Chicago Blackhawks are off to their usual hot start, but the St. Louis Blues are proving that they can compete with their division rivals in the Central. The Blues beat the New York Rangers 3-1 at Madison Square Garden Tuesday night, improving to 4-0 on the young season. What is more impressive is that they are doing this even with injuries to key contributors. They are finding that contribution from other sources, as Carl Gunnarsson and Brayden Schenn both scored, while Carter Hutton made 32 saves in the win. Jaden Schwartz would add an empty-net tally late in the third period, sealing the fourth straight win for St. Louis. Hutton stepped up in the final 20 minutes to hang on to the one-goal lead, as 16 of his stops came in the final period. The Rangers out-shot the Blues 16-8 in that period to keep the pressure on, and they out-shot them overall, 32-23. Despite that, Mika Zibanejad was the only one to find the back of the net for New York with a second-period goal that tied the game. The Blues will look to keep their perfect season alive on the road against the Florida Panthers on Thursday, while the Rangers look to find their groove when they visit the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night.
Predators Celebrate Banner With Wild Win
The Nashville Predators returned home for the first time this season on Tuesday night to raise their Western Conference Championship banner from a season ago. The night got even more celebratory about three hours later, as the Predators rallied from a two-goal, third-period deficit to stun the Philadelphia Flyers 6-5 at Bridgestone Arena. The defending Western Conference Champs scored twice in the final 1:17, including FIlip Forsberg scoring his second of the game with 35.6 seconds left for the game-winner. Nashville had gotten out to a 3-0 lead, but would then surrender five unanswered goals to fall behind 5-3 early in the third. Craig Smith and Nick Bonino added big goals for the Predators, while P.K. Subban added three assists in the team's first win of the season. During the five straight goals for Philly, Valterri Filppula scored twice, as the Flyers finished 2-2 in their first four-game road trip to open the season since 1971. Both of Forsberg's goals came in the third, as Scott Hartnell also scored to help the Predators' rally in the final 20 minutes. Nashville is hoping this win can get their season going, as they will host the Dallas Stars tomorrow night. The Flyers will finally return home for their opener against the Washington Capitals on Saturday night.
