The New York Giants could ill-afford to upset their fan base any more than what they already have, and hiring a coach that next to nobody has ever heard of was not the formula to that one. But that's exactly what they did this past week, as they hired New England Patriots wide receivers coach, Joe Judge, as their new head man. Judge was a special teams coach under Bill Belichick since the 2012 season, and was previously under that same role for four years under Nick Saban with the Alabama Crimson Tide. He got the wide receivers coach duties added to him last season.
The 38-year-old was one of seven candidates in the running for the job, but the team settled on him after losing out on Baylor head coach Matt Rhule before even getting to interview him. They also lost out on Mike McCarthy, who took the Dallas Cowboy coaching job this week. The Giants went on to receive permission from the Cowboys to talk to Jason Garrett regarding the offensive coordinator position.
Judge replaces Pat Shurmur, who was fired by the Giants on December 30th after just two seasons. The former receivers coach is now the 20th coach in franchise history, and landed the gig after interviewing with them on Monday. He is already available to join the Giants after the New England Patriots were eliminated by the Tennessee Titans in the Wild Card round last weekend. He will have to turn things around in a big way behind young stars Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley, as they are just 12-36 since the start of the 2017 season, which leaves it with his work cut out for him in his first NFL coaching gig.
