Despite Notre Dame's thrilling win over Virginia on Saturday, they have a big challenge ahead of them for the season. Starting quarterback Malik Zaire suffered a broken right ankle in Saturday's win and will miss the rest of the season.
The incident took place in the third quarter when Zaire's ankle got caught underneath a defender with his team up 19-14. He was carted off the field, and x-rays taken at the stadium confirmed the fracture.
The sophomore quarterback was making his third career start, and completed 10 of 18 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown, and added 10 carries for 87 yards. Freshman DeShone Kizer took over on Saturday and will take over as starting quarterback for the remainder of the year.
Kizer came in and threw 8-of-12 for 92 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning 39-yard touchdown pass to Will Fuller with 12 seconds to play.
This injury comes just one week after the Fighting Irish lost their starting running back Tarean Folston to a torn ACL in the opener against Texas. After losing two stars on offense in the first two weeks, Notre Dame's playoff chances seem very slim early on.
