Part two of the Philadelphia 76ers' new-look team worked to perfection on Sunday afternoon, but it was more because of a familiar face there. That familiar face was Joel Embiid, who finished with 37 point and 14 rebounds in the Sixers' 143-120 blowout of the Los Angeles Lakers. Newcomer Tobias Harris added 22 points in just his second game with the team, as Philadelphia improved to 2-0 since a very busy trade deadline. The newly-formed Sixers team even got some love from Lakers president Magic Johnson, who said after the game that "the East better watch out," and then added "this is a stacked team," referencing the 76ers.
JJ Redick added 21 points, while Jimmy Butler finished with 15 points to give the Sixers a second straight home win over a formidable Western Conference foe. They got the best of the Denver Nuggets on Friday night, just two days after acquiring Harris from the Los Angeles Clippers.
The Lakers' struggles continued, as they dropped a game under .500, despite Kyle Kuzma leading the way with 39 points. LeBron James fell just short of a triple-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists. This was his first game of the season against the 76ers, who were one of the top teams pursuing LeBron during free agency last summer before he landed with the Lakers. James missed the Sixers' visit to the Staples Center on January 29th, as did Kuzma, where the Lakers fell, 121-105.
Embiid's monster game started early with a 25-point first half, this after he put up 28 against them the entire game in Los Angeles a month ago. The new-look Sixers move on to another tough matchup when they host the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night. The Lakers will continue their east coast trip when they take on the Atlanta Hawks that same night.
