After the New York Giants scored 30+ points the past 3 games, they could not get anything going against the Philadelphia Eagles defense in a 27-0 defeat Sunday night. It was a game dominated by Philly from start to finish, on both sides of the ball, in their first shutout win in 18 years. Nick Foles threw 3 touchdown passes, while LeSean McCoy had a season-high 149 rushing yards in the victory.
The Giants fell to 3-3 after a 3-game winning streak, and even worse, lost star receiver Victor Cruz to a torn patellar tendon. Cruz will miss the rest of the season following the 3rd-quarter injury. Cruz suffered the injury while leaping at a ball in the end zone on fourth down from the Eagles 3. Many could hear the screaming coming from the 2012 Pro Bowl pick as he landed, and as he was lifted on to the cart. Cruz was in tears, with his hands to his face, as he was carted off the field.
The Eagles moved to 5-1 on the season, with their last shutout coming December 1st, 1996, a 24-0 win over the same Giants. Philadelphia remained tie atop the NFC East, along with the Dallas Cowboys. Foles ended the night with 248 passing yards, while Darren Sproles ran in for a score before leaving with a sprained MCL. Sproles is expected to miss 1-2 weeks, which works with the Eagles coming up on a bye week before traveling to Arizona on October 26th.
The Eagles defense lead the way as well, sacking Giants quarterback Eli Manning 6 times, after Manning was sacked just 7 times in the first 5 games. The Eagles defense overall had 8 sacks, including one on backup Ryan Nassib. Connor Barwin had 3, Vinny Curry had two, while Trent Cole, Brandon Graham, and Brandon Bair each had 1. The Giants look to get back over .500 next week when they visit the red-hot Cowboys next Sunday.
