The Duke Blue Devils losing Zion Williamson to an injury on the road against a ranked team, in a game that was close the entire way, normally would not result in good things for them. Although, the top-ranked team survived on the road, coming away with a thrilling 80-78 win over the 13th-ranked Florida State Seminoles on Saturday. Cam Reddish was the hero on this day, connecting on the go-ahead three-pointer with less than a second left in regulation, as the Seminoles left him wide open on the right wing. R.J. Barrett led the Blue Devils with 32 points, as they improved to a perfect 3-0 in conference play with a win in just their second true road game of the season. Both of those games have come this week, as they blew out Wake Forest last Tuesday away from home.
Reddish lifted the Blue Devils to their ninth straight victory since falling to the Gonzaga Bulldogs at the Maui Invitational, which is their lone defeat of the season thus far. The game's hero finished with 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting in the win. That helped the Blue Devils overcome losing Williamson, who left the game with an apparent eye injury late in the first half. He was poked in the eye before halftime and never returned, as he finished with 11 points and eight rebounds in 17 minutes.
The Seminoles have now dropped two of their first three ACC games, as they forced a turnover and got free throws from P.J. Savoy with 15.8 seconds left to give them a lead late, on the brink of a major upset. Although, Barrett responded with one of two free throws late, all to set up the game-winner for Reddish. Barrett finished at 10-of-19 from the floor, and took over the offense after their star went down.
Florida State was hoping lightning would strike twice, as Saturday was eight years to the day that they upset No. 1 Duke on their home floor in 2011. Mifondu Kabengele recorded his third-career double-double off the bench with 24 points and 10 rebounds, while Phil Cofer made five three-pointers and finished with a season-high 21 points. The Seminoles will hit the road on Monday night to visit the upset-minded Pittsburgh Panthers, while the Blue Devils will host the Syracuse Orange that same night.
