The Anaheim Ducks have made a living on third-period comebacks this season and they continued that same trend on Monday night. The Ducks spoiled the return of the postseason to Winnipeg, after a 19-year absence, as Rickard Rakell tipped in the game-winner at 5:12 of overtime for a 5-4 win over the Winnipeg Jets. The win gives the Ducks a 3-0 series lead heading in to Game 4.
The Jets have blown third-period leads in all 3 games of the series so far. Despite the disappointing losses in the first 2 games, the atmosphere was electric for the first playoff game in Winnipeg since 1996.
Lee Stempniak, Bryan Little, Tyler Myers, and Blake Wheeler each found the back of the net for the Jets in the loss. Ondrej Pavelec made 26 saves against 31 shots, but listened to the chants of "Pavy" from the Jets' crowd of 15,016.
Cam Fowler, Corey Perry, Jakob Silfverberg, Ryan Kesler, and Rakell netted the 5 goals for Anaheim in the win. Even after the game-winning goal, chants of "Go, Jets, Go" could be heard as the teams headed to the locker room. Anaheim became the first team in NHL history to win 3 straight playoff games when trailing in the third period of all 3 games.
The Jets have led for a combined 65:33 of the series, compared to Anaheim's 11:21. Little had 2 spectacular chances on the power play at the end of the third period, but Frederik Anderson made stellar saves to force overtime. Anderson finished the night with 31 saves.
Only 4 teams in NHL history have come back from a 3-0 series deficit to win, with the latest coming last season when the Los Angeles Kings did it against the San Jose Sharks. The Ducks will hope to shut down the Jets and advance to the second round in Game 4 on Wednesday night.
