Defensive end Robert Ayers channeled his inner Bugs Bunny on social media Tuesday afternoon to make an announcement, which was that he is retiring from the NFL. He made this news public by posting on Facebook "THAT'S ALL FOLKS," while also adding how thankful he is for his time in the league. He is now focusing on the "next chapter of life....." most likely including more time with family.
The 33-year-old spent nine years in the NFL, but did not play last season after getting released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in March. He is a former 18th overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos, and ended up playing 120 regular season games, without any playoff experience. Although, his best season came in 2015 with the New York Giants, when he recorded a career-high nine sacks on the year. He finishes his NFL career with 34.5 sacks, nine forced fumbles, and 270 tackles. His final season in the league was 2017, and it was a productive one for the Buccaneers, as he had 6.5 sacks and 31 tackles in just 12 games, including 10 starts.
