The Detroit Red Wings open up their season in 15 days, but it looks like they will be doing so without one of the world's top players. Forward Pavel Datsyuk left Detroit's first preseason game with a shoulder injury with 5 minutes left in the 3rd. This was following a check in to the boards from the Penguins' Rob Scuderi in the Wings' 2-1 victory.
Datsyuk is expected to miss up to 4 weeks with a second-degree separation in his right shoulder. The Russian star played in just 47 games last season due to numerous knee problems. This is the last thing Detroit wants to see after battling injuries all last season. Only 2 players played all 82 games last season, with Datsyuk and Zetterberg appearing together 29 times.
The Red Wings are in the better of the 2 divisions in the Eastern Conference. The Wings, Maple Leafs, Bruins, Canadiens, and Lightning are all expected to contend for playoff spots this season. This will bring good competition to Joe Louis Arena all season long.
Pavel Datsyuk is expected to miss the first 2 weeks of the regular season. In those 2 weeks the Red Wings will play the Bruins twice, the Maple Leafs twice, and the Ducks, Canadiens, and Penguins once. Not really the definition of a laid back start to the season.
