The Golden State Warriors seemed a bit like the New Orleans Pelicans had their number Wednesday night, yet the two-time defending champs turned to their star to rally on their home floor. Steph Curry scored 41 points, including nine three-pointers, as the Warriors got past the Pelicans, 147-140, to hang on to the top spot in the Western Conference. Curry made history by becoming the first player in NBA history with eight or more three-pointers made in three straight games. He did so in the Warriors' sixth straight win, as they have leapfrogged the Denver Nuggets atop the conference, including a blowout win at the Pepsi Center on Tuesday night.
Anthony Davis had 30 points, 18 rebounds, seven assists, and three blocks for the Pelicans, before going down with a hard fall underneath the basket with 2:22 to play in regulation. He was able to walk off under his own power, but did not return, which was a big blow for New Orleans in a close game. Davis was coming off a 46-point, 16-rebound game on Monday, that after starting 0-for-5 with four points in the opening 12 minutes. The Pelicans did lead by double digits for a few minutes during the first half, but Golden State put together a rally before halftime to cut in to their deficit, and then jumped ahead in the third quarter.
The Pelicans and Warriors combined for an NBA-record 43 three-pointers on the night, which broke the record that was set by the Warriors and Sacramento Kings on January 5th at the Golden 1 Center. Kevin Durant had a huge three-pointer to give his team the lead for good in the fourth, as he finished with 30 points and 15 rebounds, while Klay Thompson had 19 points, including four three-pointers. Draymond Green added two made shots from beyond the arc, as the Warriors had 19 as team. Curry himself has 28 of them over the past three games, and Golden State has at least 18 of them in a franchise-record four straight games. Curry's big quarter was the third, as he came out of halftime with 23 points to shift the moment Golden State's way.
The Pelicans did get 29 points from Nikola Mirotic and 25 from Jrue Holiday, who also had seven assists in their 24th loss of the year. They continue to struggle in the Western Conference, now sitting at three games under .500 after their hot start.
The Warriors are excited to be debuting DeMarcus Cousins on their team Friday night when they visit the eighth-seeded Los Angeles Clippers. Meanwhile, the Pelicans will visit the Portland Trail Blazers that same night.
