The Indianapolis Colts may have proven that they do not have as much faith in Jacoby Brissett taking over Andrew Luck's starting quarterback spot as they first stated. They will start him in their season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers this Sunday, but they will have a new "backup" on the sidelines. The Colts agreed to a three-year, $12 million deal with quarterback Brian Hoyer on Monday, just two days after he was cut, along with Deamryius Thomas, by the New England Patriots.
The former Michigan State Spartan will received $9 million in guaranteed money, giving him some major hope in his career after rookie Jarrett Stidham was named Tom Brady's backup for the 2019 season. The 33-year-old Hoyer also has stints with the Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Chicago Bears, and San Francisco 49ers. Over 65 career NFL games, he has started 37 times, including 13 starts for the Browns in 2014.
This signing comes less than a week after the Colts welcomed Brock Osweiler in for a workout, which did not result in a contract for the former Denver Bronco. Before this move, the only other two quarterbacks on their roster was Chad Kelly and Phillip Walker. Kelly was placed on the suspended list for the first two games of the season, while Walker has never played a NFL regular season snap. The Colts add a veteran who has watched Brady win multiple Super Bowls, while also recording 9,902 yards, 48 touchdowns, and 30 interceptions in his career.
