There is a ton of controversy regarding the 4 teams selected in to the inaugural college football playoffs, especially if you talk to the Big 12 conference. The top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide will battle the 4th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes in the Sugar Bowl, and the 2nd-ranked Oregon Ducks will take on the 3rd-ranked Florida State Seminoles in the Rose Bowl. Both games will take place on New Year's Day, with the Rose Bowl at 5 p.m. EST., and the Sugar Bowl at 8:30 p.m. EST.
Alabama won the SEC title Saturday by defeated 16th-ranked Missouri 42-13, while Ohio State shut out Wisconsin 59-0 for the Big Ten championship. The Buckeyes are playing with their 3rd-string QB following the preseason injury to Braxton Miller, and the broken ankle to J.T. Barrett in the game against Michigan.
Oregon won the Pac-12 title in convincing fashion, blowing out the 7th-ranked Arizona Wildcats in the rematch Friday night 51-13. Meanwhile, the Seminoles squeaked by 11th-ranked Georgia Tech 37-35 for the ACC championship, remaining undefeated.
The Buckeyes bumped TCU out of the top 4, despite their 55-3 win over Iowa State. Baylor and TCU were the last 2 out, at 5 and 6, sharing a Big 12 title after Baylor defeated Kansas State. They are the only power conference without a title game, which may be what robbed them. The conference loses out on $6 million for having at least one team in the playoffs.
The National Championship game will be played on January 12th, as the playoffs replaces the BCS. The Baylor Bears will play the Michigan State Spartans in the Cotton Bowl, while the TCU Horned Frogs will play the Ole Miss Rebels in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. Both of those games will also take place on New Year's Day.
Heading into the playoffs, Alabama is a 9.5-point favorite over Ohio State, while Oregon is an 8.5-point favorite over Florida State. It is the first time the Seminoles are underdogs in their last 50 games, dating back to September 2011 against Clemson.
