The two undefeated teams in the NFL had tough challenges on Sunday afternoon, and both were successful, but one a lot easier than the other. First, the Kansas City Chiefs picked apart the tough defense of the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 30-14 victory. The Chiefs intercepted Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles four times, which set them up beautifully to pull away in the rain-soaked contest at Arrowhead Stadium. Patrick Mahomes had a down game through the air, but did find the end zone on the ground from four yards out in the first quarter.
Kareem Hunt ran for 87 yards and a touchdown, while Travis Kelce had five catches for 100 yards, helping the Chiefs total 424 yards as a team. Tyreek Hill was matched up against Jalen Ramsey, and still had four catches for 61 yards, as Kansas City scored on their first drive of the game and never trailed. That first possession was a 73-yard drive, which ended with Mahomes' lone touchdown of the game.
Blake Bortles threw for 430 yards on 33-of-61 passing, as he also had a fumble loss to go along with his four interceptions. One of his picks was returned for a touchdown by Chiefs' defensive back Chris Jones. Bortles did run for a touchdown, but the Jaguars dropped in to a tie for first in the AFC South with a 3-2 record. They will visit the also struggling Dallas Cowboys next week, while the Chiefs move on to a primetime showdown with Tom Brady's New England Patriots on Sunday Night Football.
The Los Angeles Rams also moved to 5-0, but it was not nearly as easy in a 33-31 road win over the Seattle Seahawks. The Rams not only had to deal with the tough Seahawks team in front of their raucous home crowd, but also lost wide receivers Brandin Cooks and Cooper Kupp to injuries. So they turned to their rushing game, as Todd Gurley ran for 77 yards and three touchdowns, as the Rams recorded just their second road win of the season.
The loss of two weapons didn't stop Jared Goff from throwing for 321 yards and a touchdown, as he overcame two interceptions against a revamped Seahawks' defense. Seattle also looked very efficient on offense, led by Russell Wilson's 198 yards and three touchdowns, as he did not turn the ball over on this day. Chris Carson also stepped up on the ground with 116 yards on 19 carries, as Seattle's run game continues to improve week by week.
Rams head coach Sean McVay did not want to give the ball back to the Seahawks late, so they went for it on 4th-and-1, and Goff plunged ahead to get the first down with 1:39 to play, allowing the Rams to kneel it down the rest of the way and escape with the win. They will take their perfect record to Denver next week to battle the Broncos. The Seahawks drop to 2-3 on the year and will visit Jon Gruden's struggling Oakland Raiders next week.
