Carlos Hyde was only a free agent for one day after the Jacksonville Jaguars included him in a list of five players that they cut on Friday. Technically he still is a free agent until the new NFL year begins on Wednesday, but that is expected to change. Hyde met with the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday and the two sides have reportedly agreed to a one-year deal. ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first to report the news, as the contract is worth $2.8 million, with $1.6 million guaranteed. Hyde will fill a major hole in the Chiefs' backfield behind Patrick Mahomes, which was created when they cut Kareem Hunt, who has since been signed by the Cleveland Browns.
The 28-year-old has rushed for 3,302 yards and 26 touchdowns over his five-year NFL career, but was cut so the Jaguars could save $4.7 million in their salary cap. The Chiefs made this move with them losing Spencer Ware to free agency, as Ware was the one to take over when Hunt was cut. Ware struggled a bit, although, he did show signs of picking it up, but was out-shined by Damien Williams. In fact, Williams is still expected to be the starter in front of Hyde, for now.
The Chiefs have also been talked about to potentially draft a running back in April, as Hyde has dealt with injuries during his career. He is a former Brown himself, but was acquired in a trade by the Jaguars on October 20th. In eight games with Jacksonville, Hyde ran for 189 yards on 58 carries. Only twice did he average more than 3.3 yards per carry with the Jaguars, with his season-high being 5.9 when he ran for 47 yards on eight carries against the Miami Dolphins in Week 16. He also averaged 5.5 yards per carry in Week 11 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but will hope to make more of a name for himself with a team that is expected to stay right in the thick of the AFC Title picture.
