While one star wide receiver is already looking for a job (Antonio Brown), another is getting paid nicely by his Super Bowl-contending team. Tyreek Hill received a three-year contract extension from the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday, which will pay him $54 million. The extension also includes $35 million in guaranteed money, as ProFootballTalk was the first to report the deal two days before the team's season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The 25-year-old has seen his catches, receiving yards, and touchdowns increase in each of the past three seasons with his MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes leading that offense. In Mahomes' first season as the starter last year, Hill finished with 87 catches for 1,479 yards, and 12 touchdowns. Before Mahomes, it was Alex Smith throwing to him, where he was looked at as a talented receiver with potential. He has since become one of the stars of the league as Mahomes' top target, and he is now getting paid like it.
This new contract comes two months after their was plenty of controversy surrounding Hill with his child abuse allegations. He was under investigation after audio was released in the case, which led to the Chiefs suspending him from their off-season practice. That audio came out after it was announced Hill would not be charged, as he was heard in the clip saying to his fiancee "you need to be terrified of me too." Before these incidents, he hadn't had any controversy since he pleaded guilty to punching and choking his pregnant girlfriend while he was at Oklahoma. He was a fifth-round pick of the Chiefs in 2016, and if he can keep his off-the-field actions clean, he should continue to be on the rise in the NFL.
