The Houston Astros took their second major blow in as many weeks on Wednesday, losing shortstop Carlos Correa for four to six weeks to a fractured rib. The team placed Correa on the injured list Wednesday afternoon before their 2-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs that night at Minute Maid Park. The story got a bit strange a couple hours after the announcement, as the shortstop blamed a massage for the injury in a statement. The massage took place at his home on Tuesday, as Correa expressed that he is "extremely disappointed" in this odd turn of events.
One of many young stars on the Astros' roster won the 2015 American League Rookie of the Year Award, and is batting .295 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs so far this season. The year he won the award, he hit .279 with 22 home runs and 68 RBIs, but he now joins outfielder George Springer on the injured list. Springer went down last week against the Boston Red Sox with a hamstring injury.
Despite this most recent injury, team general manager Jeff Luhnow claimed that the team was still "comfortable" due to Alex Bregman's nice play at the shortstop position in the past. Houston also plans on calling up their top shortstop prospect, Jack Mayfield, from the minors. The Astros sent Aledmys Diaz to the IL with a forearm injury on Sunday, and have been playing without former American League MVP Jose Altuve for nearly a month. Altuve returned to Houston from his rehab assignment due to a "sore right knee" recently. The only bright side for the 2017 World Series Champions is that these injuries are taking place so early in the season.
