Shildt was initially the interim manager when the Cardinals parted ways with Mike Matheny on July 14th, 2018, but he was quickly named their permanent manager on August 28th of that same year. In his first full season as the Cardinals' manager, he led them to their first NL Central Division Title since 2015 with a 91-71 record. They went on to beat the Atlanta Braves in Game 5 of the NLDS, before getting swept away by the Nationals in the NLCS.
At the time of this announcement, Shildt currently sits as a National League Manager of the Year finalist, along with Brian Snitker of the Atlanta Braves and Craig Counsell of the Milwaukee Brewers. Now that he is locked in for good, they can now focus on the off-season and potential moves that will be made. They do have decisions to make on two veterans that have been around for a while, that being Matt Carpenter and Adam Wainwright. The team has already met with both players since getting swept, but no decision has been announced.
