The Philadelphia Phillies have dropped a bit out of the NL East and Wild Card races, but wins like they got on Friday night are what's going to get them back in to the playoff picture. Asdrubal Cabrera connected with a solo home run with two outs in the 10th inning to give the Phillies a 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs. The two teams played in the rain just about the entire night, as Steve Cishek gave up the winning blast for his second loss of the year.
Cabrera was mobbed by his new teammates, whom he joined from the New York Mets at the July 31st Trade Deadline. It was his fifth-career walk-off home run, and his first since September 22nd, 2016, which came off of his current teammate, Edubray Ramos. Pat Neshek threw a scoreless inning out of the bullpen to earn his second victory for Philadelphia.
Javier Baez's solo home run was the only source of run support for the Cubs, as that was his 29th long ball of the season and his National League leading 98th RBI. That came off of Phillies starter Nick Pivetta in the fifth inning. That was the only blemish on Pivetta, who allowed just five hits and struck out six over five innings.
On the other end, Jose Quintana had an equally good start, giving up a run on three hits over six innings, as he struck out seven in the no-decision effort. Quintana has bee hot as of late, allowing just 13 hits over his last three starts, this after posting a 7.52 ERA in his previous four outings.
Cesar Hernandez's RBI single was the only run of the game for the Phillies up until Cabrera's game-winner. With the big win, they sit just two games back of the Atlanta Braves, who fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday. They also sit three games back in the NL Wild Card race, The Cubs' loss combined with the St. Louis Cardinals' win over the Cincinnati Reds has them with a 3.5-game lead in the NL Central. These two teams will continue their series on Saturday night.
