With just one day to go until the NBA Draft, teams continued to make deals on Wednesday as they prepare for next season. One trade included a former MVP, as the Chicago Bulls dealt oft-injured guard Derrick Rose to the New York Knicks for Robin Lopez, Jose Calderon, and Jerian Grant. New York also receives guard Justin Holiday and a second-round pick in 2017.
The Bulls drafted their hometown star with the top overall pick in 2008 out of Memphis. Rose was very emotional about leaving Chicago, but if it had to be done, he claimed the Knicks as his top choice.
Reports surfaced last week about the Knicks having internal discussions with the Bulls regarding the point guard. New York had plans of upgrading their point guard position after hiring Jeff Hornacek as their new head coach.
After winning the MVP in the 2010-11 season, Rose has battled multiple injuries, including a torn ACL. He did average 17.7 points last season and shot 45.3 percent from the field, including 55.3 percent while driving to the basket. Knicks' point guards averaged just 7.6 points last year, shooting 44.7 percent on drives.
His last accomplishment was making the Eastern Conference All-Star team in 2012, but has since struggled to find consistent playing time on the floor. He sat out the entire 2012-13 season, played in just 10 games in 2013-14, and played in only half the games in 2014-15.
He found more health this past season, playing in 66 games, his most in five years. The Knicks will host a press conference on Thursday at 6 p.m. EST. to introduce their new starting point guard.
Another trade involved three teams, and two quality guards, as the Hawks sent Jeff Teague to the Pacers, George Hill went from Indiana to Utah, and the No. 12 overall pick is now in Atlanta. Although, the Hawks plan on dealing that pick and the 21st overall pick during Thursday's draft.
Teague did reveal on Instagram that he played most of last season with a torn patellar tendon, but later removed the post. He did not require surgery after undergoing an MRI following the conclusion of the year. The 27-year-old played in 79 regular-season games, averaging 15.7 points and 5.9 assists, and shooting 43.9 percent from the field.
The 30-year-old Hill averaged 12.1 points and 3.4 assists in 74 games with the Pacers in 2015-16. He turned it up for their playoff series with the Raptors, averaging 13.6 points and 2.1 assists in the seven-game series. Both Hill and Teague will be unrestricted free agents next summer.
