The Boston Bruins have struggled against the Washington Capitals over the past several years, but the defending Stanley Cup Champions' current struggles worked in Boston's favor on Sunday afternoon. The Bruins went to Capital One Arena and shut out the Capitals, 1-0, to snap a 14-game losing streak against Washington. Tuukka Rask made 24 saves and became the the Bruins' all-time leader in wins by a goalie with his 253rd victory, which moves him past Cecil "Tiny" Thompson. The shutout is the second of the season for Rask, as well as the 43rd shutout in the NHL this year.
David Krejci scored the lone goal for the Bruins, who earned their 28th win, but still sit one point behind the Montreal Canadiens for the third and final division spot in the Atlantic Division. Montreal beat the Edmonton Oilers in overtime later on Sunday. Boston had not defeated Washington since March 29th, 2014 before Sunday, but they were facing a team that had just snapped a seven-game losing streak with a win on Friday night.
The Capitals fell to 1-6-2 in their past eight games, yet they still hold the third place spot in the Metropolitan Division. Braden Holtby made 38 saves in the loss for the Caps, who were out-shot, 30-13, through 40 minutes of play. Both teams went 0-for-3 on the power play, but the game's only goal came off the stick of Krejci at 10:43 of the second period.
Boston is now 1-1-2 over their past four games as they move on to host the New York Islanders on Tuesday night. Elsewhere, the Capitals will hope to get back on the winning side when they play host to the Vancouver Canucks that same night.
