The Jacksonville Jaguars nearly pulled off the upset of the New England Patriots in last year's AFC Playoffs, but there was no "almost" on Sunday afternoon. Blake Bortles out-played Tom Brady to lead the Jaguars to an easy 31-20 win over the Patriots at home, improving them to 2-0 on the young season. Bortles threw for 377 yards and four touchdowns, as the Jaguars never trailed on their home field. Three of Bortles' scores came in the first half, as the Jaguars beat Brady for the first time in nine tries.
Donte Moncrief, Austin Sefarian-Jenkins, Keelan Cole, and Dede Westbrook all caught touchdown passes, while Cole led the way with with seven catches for 116 yards, including a huge one-handed grab before his 24-yard score.
Jacksonville led by as many as 18 points on the day, as they earned their first win over New England since January 1999. It was just their second win against them in franchise history, and first of which that took place in the regular season.
Brady completed 24-of-35 passes for 235 yards, with both of his touchdown passes finding Chris Hogan. He was under pressure most of the day against the tough Jaguars' defense, who sacked the Hall of Fame quarterback twice in their win. Brady also had a key fumble late, as his team was driving, down 11 in the fourth quarter. Dante Fowler was credited with the strip, which sealed Jacksonville's upset victory.
With the Miami Dolphins' win over the New York Jets, the Patriots fall out of first place in the AFC East with a 1-1 record. They will stay on the road to battle the 0-2 Detroit Lions on Sunday Night Football. The Jaguars will stay home to host the Tennessee Titans.
