The Columbus Blue Jackets' quest to overcome their slow start continues to get tougher and tougher as this week goes on due to injuries. The latest player to go down is veteran Cam Atkinson, who the team placed on injured reserve Thursday due to a sprained ankle. The official timetable is at least two to three weeks before Atkinson can return, as the team had this move retroactive to December 19th. That is the date that this injury took place, which occurred during their game against the Los Angeles Kings.
The 30-year-old has helped the Jackets attempt to climb up the tight Metropolitan standings as of late, recording nine goals and 12 assists in 35 games played this season. Although, that is below his own standards, as he is coming off a 41-goal season a year ago, and has posted at least 20 goals in each of the past six seasons.
The Blue Jackets have won five consecutive games to give them 17 wins and 40 points on the season, pulling them within five points of the final Eastern Conference playoff spot, which is currently held by the Carolina Hurricanes. They will be back on the ice following a Christmas break on Friday night for a tough road matchup with the Washington Capitals.
