The Cincinnati Bengals, if they want of course, have won the race for LSU Tigers quarterback Joe Burrow by locking in the top spot in the NFL Draft last week. If they do go that route, as expected, then we know who will be protecting him and snapping the ball to him, as the Bengals gave starting center Trey Hopkins a three-year contract extension. The two sides agreed to the deal on Saturday, just 24 hours before their season finale at home against the Cleveland Browns.
The contract keeps Hopkins with the Bengals through the 2022 season, and is worth $20.4 million, but it only includes $4.5 million in guaranteed money. 2019 was his third consecutive season that he was playing on a one-year contract, this past one was worth $3.1 million. That had him set up to become an unrestricted free agent this March.
Hopkins is in his fourth NFL season out of the university of Texas and has started all 15 games for the 1-14 Bengals this season. He won the starting job at the center position in the preseason, but has already made 36 starts throughout his 45-game NFL career.
