The Houston Astros may have not got to the World Series again this past season, but they did enjoy the emergence of third baseman Alex Bregman, who was rewarded handsomely on Wednesday. The Astros gave Bregman a six-year contract extension that is worth $100 million. ESPN was the first to report the news for the third baseman, who was not eligible for free agency until after the 2022 season. The 24-year-old will begin to reap the benefits of this new contract this season, with the first two years bought out, as well as his arbitration years. The former second overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft is entering just his fourth season, all with the Astros, yet he is already a household name in the city of Houston.
Bregman is coming off an MVP-caliber season for the Astros, who fell short in the MLB Postseason against the eventual World Series Champion Boston Red Sox. He was an All-Star in 2018 and finished in fifth place in the MVP voting after hitting 31 home runs, driving in 103 runs, stealing 10 bases, and compiling a .926 OPS. In is short amount of time at the major league level, only Carlos Correa and Jeff Bagwell have produced more Wins Above Replacement in their first three seasons with Houston.
The third baseman has been held back a bit during spring training after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow in January, although, he is expected to be ready for Opening Day on March 28th. With this new contract, the Astros now have both Bregman and second baseman Jose Altuve locked in through the 2024 season. Altuve signed a seven-year extension last season, this after winning the 2017 American League MVP Award. His contract is worth $163.5 million, including 26.2 million per season fro 2020 to 2024.
