The Arkansas Razorbacks were in talks with Eric Musselman for most of the weekend, and it was made official on Sunday afternoon that they have hired him as their next head basketball coach. Musselman spent four years with the Nevada Wolf Pack, but is leaving that job in the Mountain West Conference to take on a larger challenge in the SEC. Musselman went 110-34 during his time with Nevada, which included three consecutive Mountain West Conference regular season titles. When he took over their program in 2015, he was taking over a nine-win team, but quickly boosted that total up 24 wins in his first season there.
Musselman will take over the spot filled by Mike Anderson, who was fired by the Razorbacks last month. In eight seasons as their head coach, Anderson went 169-102, including three NCAA Tournament appearances. Conversely, Musselman has three appearances in the March Madness tournament in the past three years.
The now former Nevada head coach continued to get better as each season went on, including 29-win seasons each of the past two seasons, and three straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yuracheck spoke highly of Musselman once the news was made official. The Wolf Pack were eliminated by the Florida Gators in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, which gave Arkansas more time to chat with/scout Musselman before making the move.
