The Alabama Crimson Tide have waited six years to say that they have taken down John Calipari's Kentucky Wildcats, and after Saturday afternoon, they can finally celebrate that achievement. Tevin Mack led the way with 22 points, as the unranked Crimson Tide upset the 13th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats, 77-75, on their home floor. The victory snaps a 10-game losing streak against the Wildcats, which dates back to the 2013 season. Mack helped the Tide lead for most of the day, making six three-pointers in the first half alone, as the Tide pulled off the upset in both teams' conference openers. This victory also comes two days before their football team will once again battle the Clemson Tigers for the College Football Playoff National Championship.
Dazon Ingram chipped in 11 points, all of which came in the second half, as he helped seal the win by sinking key free throws in the final seconds. The victory was the Tide's fifth in a row, and gives them a good chance of entering the AP rankings with a 10-3 record to go with their statement win. Their current win streak did start after a bad loss to Georgia State on a game-ending three-pointer, which they nearly gave up again this time around.
The Crimson Tide led by as many as 11 points on the day, but Kentucky rallied in the second half to make things interesting late. Ingram's free throws with 23 seconds left helped even out Ashton Hagans' two late baskets, as Tyler Herro's three-point attempt at the buzzer was no good. The Tide built their double digit lead in the second half after trailing by two at the break, and they finished with five players in double figures. That includes Kira Lewis Jr. with 12 points, Donta Hall with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Herbert Jones with 10 rebounds and six assists.
The loss for Kentucky is their third of the season, despite them getting 15 points from P.J. Washington and 13 from Keldon Johnson. They will play host to Texas A&M on Tuesday night, while the Crimson Tide will visit the LSU Tigers that same night.
