It seems as if every other games is a historic one for Alex Rodriguez and the New York Yankees, as it was on Friday night. Rodriguez recorded four hits, including passing Barry Bonds for second on the all-time RBI list, in the Yankees' 8-7 win over the Los Angeles Angels for their fourth consecutive victory.
The Angels trailed 8-1 heading into the ninth inning, but following substitutions for both teams, they would rally late. The first eight batters reached in the ninth against Esmil Rogers and Dellin Betances, as they scored six runs to make it close. After giving up his first earned run of the season, Betances retired three in a row with the bases loaded to record his second save of the year.
Didi Gregorious had an error early in the inning when he allowed a routine popup to drop in the infield. He avenged that miscue with a nice stop late, and Carlos Perez struck out with runners at the corners to end it, sending the Angels to their third loss in a row.
The Yankees' were able to hit the Halos' starter Jered Weaver well, as Stephen Drew went deep twice and Mark Teixeira once. Rodriguez passes Bonds with an RBI single in the fifth inning, giving him 1,997 RBI in his career, trailing only Hank Aaron's 2,297. Rodriguez also scored his 1,950th run to break a tie with Stan Musial for eighth place in that category.
A-Rod now has 2,991 career hits and recorded his first four-hit game since 2011. Drew, who began the day hitting just .165, had his third career multi-homer day, and first since 2013.
Weaver had won his last four decisions, but fell fell to 1-3 with an 8.71 ERA in five starts at Yankee Stadium. He left following Drew's second shot in the sixth inning to give New York a 7-1 lead. Nathan Eovaldi left with a 4-0 lead in the sixth, running his record 5-1.
These two teams will continue their weekend series tonight, with the series finale coming tomorrow afternoon.
