The St. Louis Rams got off to a quick 14-0 lead Monday night, but that was quickly erased in the San Francisco 49ers 31-17 victory. The 49ers outscored the Rams 31-3 after the 1st quarter, as the offense began to click, while the defense began to dominate.
Niners quarterback Colin Kaepernick threw for 343 yards, and 3 touchdowns that helped erased the early deficit. Kaepernick found Brandon Lloyd, Anquan Boldin, and Michael Crabtree for touchdown receptions. The 49ers have now won 3 in a row, after a 1-2 start to the season.
San Francisco's defense was also what lead to the impressive victory, recording 5 sacks on Rams quarterback Austin Davis. Ahmad Brooks and Dan Skuta each recorded 2 sacks on the night. Brooks even mentioned after the game "No disrespect, but I didn't know who their quarterback was." That didn't seem to matter to the 49ers defensive line on this night.
Dontae Johnson also returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown with less than a minute left to seal the victory, and the comeback. After 1 quarter of play, the Rams had a 14-0 lead and 151 yards of offense. They would only total 158 yards in the final 3 quarters of play. Davis threw 21/42 for 236 yards, after throwing for 300 yards each of the last 2 games, with 6 touchdown passes.
This is not the first time the Rams have blown a double-digit lead this season. They fell to the Dallas Cowboys 34-31 in their previous home game, after getting out to a 21-0 lead. The Rams now sit at 1-4 with another tough home game against the Seattle Seahawks next week. The 49ers ran their record to 4-2 and will be featured on Sunday Night Football next week, visiting Peyton Manning's Denver Broncos.
